The true essence of science is humbly understanding the limitations of being human. Our senses and intuitions are amazing at keeping us alive in the wilderness, but this does not always translate well to understanding how the world works around us. Our brains are full of cognitive biases, meaning that we often see what we want to see and interpret things in a way that conforms to our model of the world – even if that model is wrong. The scientific method is simply a procedure for removing human error as much as possible from an experiment, so there is as little chance as possible that our stupidity can skew the results.
